My first job was washing towels at a relatively upscale gym/fitness center/YMCA type place.

I personally don’t give a shit about nudity, but spending that much time in the locker room you see some shit.

There was the guy who would always be naked pretty much the second he got in the locker room, and would go about his business nude. He was like 50, over 6 feet tall, had a huge head of long blond hair. He was kind of tan/sunburned always in a kind of unhealthy looking way. Huge alcoholic perfectly round beer guy, and a literal knee slapper of a dick. I always thought he looked kind of like a male lion personified.

Then there were the shower shitters, which luckily I didn’t have to clean and was very uncommon.

The ones that would get to me would be the old guys who sit nude in the pleather easy chairs reading the paper or whatever. Wildly unhygienic just stamping your asshole around a public place, but the way their scrotums would stick and make noise peeling off the pleather was unforgettable.

This was all almost 20 years ago holy shit that brought back some memories.

After the managers left we would run and jump on the front of the sports drink machines and all take home like 4 powerade or whatever got knocked out.

Oh and my boss called me and told me if I couldnt finish the job by a certain time of night for closing, i should clock out and keep working until the job is done.

There’s this party I really like in São Paulo called “Hotline” that is based on the Hotline Miami soundtrack and one of the regulars of the party is a nudist and I always have to warn people I invite to the party that they’re going to see a guy totally naked but that is OK, he always do it and he dosen’t harass or bother anyone. At first is kinda shocking, but you get used eventually. I’m actually came to enjoying it, in a “this party is so fucking good and relaxed that he can express himself without anyone making a fuss” kinda way. There’s also this guy who have a mini-projector in his shoulders and PS4 controllers and you can play videgames from him.

Middle-Aged Man In Gym Locker Room Puts Shirt On Before Underwear

FREDERICKSBURG, VA—Unable to fully avert their gaze as the situation unfolded, sources in the men’s locker room at Capital Fitness confirmed Thursday that a middle-aged gym patron put on his shirt before his underwear. “I swear the guy’s pair of briefs were sitting right there on the bench, but he just ignored them and went straight for his shirt,” said onlooker Mike Housakos, who noted that instead of continuing to dress himself after buttoning his shirt down to his waist, the man then walked all the way to the opposite side of the locker room to deposit his towel in the bin. “And it’s not like he was in any rush to get his underwear on after that. He even picked up his phone and looked at it for a little bit. Jesus.” Sources confirmed that at press time, the half-nude man was putting on his socks.

Half of me thinks this should be totally normal and our aversion to nudity is rooted in puritanical nonsense. The other half of me thinks these dudes are basically sexually assaulting people.

      basically sexually assaulting people.

Eh I wouldn’t go that far. None of them were shoving it in my face. Even the guy talking to me. It’s pretty easy to avoid looking at their hairy balls if you’re dedicated to it.

So the reason I think that is because I’m certain a non-zero amount are doing it intentionally. I’m certain of this because so many men send unsolicited dick pics that I can’t imagine there isn’t overlap here. They know they can get in trouble if it’s too overt, but at least some of them know they’re making people uncomfortable and they like that shit.

If that was the plan hanging out in a space dedicated to facilitating male nudity doesn’t seem like the way to go. It seems to me that you’re uncomfortable with male nudity and is projecting evil intention on to a thing that is entirely natural. A person in a space in which nudity is not only acceptable but expected is not engaging in a sex crime by being nude, and if you don’t want to see genitalia don’t look.

I mean, I think I explained my position pretty clearly if you read both of my comments. I don’t have a problem with male nudity (or any nudity), I just know that many people use their own nudity as a weapon against others (in countries where it is taboo). I know this because I’ve seen them do it with my own eyes, I’ve had them do it to me, I’ve heard them brag about it, etc.

Simply because it is appropriate in a given setting doesn’t mean people cannot have ill intentions. A space where it is expected sounds like the perfect place to do it without consequences. But seriously, if you have never known a male to show their genitals to others intentionally in a locker room then you just aren’t paying attention or you’ve never been in a men’s locker room.

I’m also obviously not saying every single man or even most of them are doing this. I very clearly said it’s just non-zero. You’re welcome to disagree, but suggesting that I’m projecting and telling me how I feel is not welcome. I literally even said it’s coming from a puritanical place, I can’t figure out why you’d even suggest this.

I’m not expressing faux outrage, I’m not even trying to express real outrage. I suggest you look up what projecting means if you don’t think telling someone they are projecting is telling them how they feel.

Sorry, I don’t really want to have this conversation with you anymore.

imo this is what locker rooms are for.

the design can have a lot to do with it though. the old YMCA near me was downtown and had a locker room with multiple rows of waist/chest high lockers in an otherwise open space, and communal pole showers. made it easy to be social. its demolished, the replacement is outside the city center, a weird alienating locker room design and only private showers.

    Found the uptight American.

I’m in Europe right now. Nobody cares. Half the continent is nude most of the time, and everybody just nods, eats baguette or eel, and carries on.

I’m European and I feel uncomfortable in locker rooms as well. I know that it is perfectly natural and that the chance of somebody doing something weird is really low, but I still don’t like to be naked around naked strangers.

One time, 12ish years ago, I was really bored in the city. I saw an event posted: male nude yoga. OK fine, I’ll give it a try. Maybe I’ll find peace or whatever.

On the day, I got there, and I just saw a mass of gray pupes. I turned back and left.

I hate to age shame. Fuck I’m middle aged now. But damn I don’t need to be around that.

  • In a country with a very strong sauna and communal swimming hall culture this sounds so familiar.

Was just at a summer cabin, happily reading my book by the lake and my view was a naked couple doing their sauna in a nearby island. It’s so funny in a country of supposed introverts, but you can’t go anywhere in the summer without seeing naked people on lake shores.

We grow up doing the sauna with family, often extended family included and family friends. You see so many bits of different ages so maybe it should just feel normal, but personally I would still prefer some privacy. I know people bond in the sauna here, like work colleagues do it together.
