Celeste is $2 right now, I got it for free on the Epic Games store but I got it again for the steam cloud saves.
I got Doom Eternal and started playing that, it’s actually really good. I feel like I’m pretty bad at it but that means lots of room for improvement.
Of course Terraria is a must-buy if you don’t have it already. Same with Portal and such. Stardew Valley is also really good, but I didn’t really enjoy it until I played multiplayer with my friends.
Yes! With 1000hrs in Terraria, I agree. Terraria is a must-try. It might not click with you, but if it does…
As for SDV- I’d like to add that I very specifically do not like multiplayer. A large part of the fun of it, to me, is being able to play at my own pace. Having to set that pace with someone else isn’t enjoyable to me. Not that there’s anything wrong with enjoying multiplayer, I just don’t want anyone to think that there’s a ‘proper’ way to play the game. There’s not- you do you. The only exception is choosing jojamart. That is objectively wrong.
Yeah, maybe I was too impatient back then, but for me it felt like mostly a whole lot of work, just watering the plants every day and trying to make money.
When I picked it up again later playing splitscreen with family, and then again with a friend, then we could get hyped for some goal we could all work towards. And if I was bored doing my thing then I could look over at what other people were doing, or just chat. And it’s fun to see them running around interacting with the NPCs and doing their things as well.
Sometimes it can be a little annoying yeah, like if they want to do something together while I’m busy watering the plants or whatever.
I feel like I’d never be able to complete Celeste due to it’s difficulty, any point in playing it?
It does have assist options if that’s what you want, Game Maker’s Toolkit actually made a video about it. I haven’t finished it myself but it was pretty fun, even just exploring and getting the story bits and such.
I felt like that about VVVVVV but I beat that one. Celeste looks very similar. I’m a fairly casual gamer.
It’s doable. I play the hardest optional challenges on 90% speed. I don’t play a lot of platformers but was able to beat the normal game without using assist mode.
Yeah I’m not a pro at tricky platformers but I was able to get all the missions done without adjusting difficulty or using assists. What people don’t realize is when you die you resume immediately where you left off so you never have to backtrack or replay levels. If you don’t get frustrated banging your head against the wall, it is actually pretty easy.
Celeste is fantastic. One of the best 2D platformers games I’ve ever played
I absolutely love Doom. Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are some of the best singeplayer FPS games I’ve played.
Doom 2016 wouldn’t start for me. The loading screen just hung forever. Weirdly other people had the same complaint. If I knew I could refund it a second time I might try it again.
If you can get it working somehow, I would definitely recommend playing it! Earlier this year I played through 95% of the game on my Steam Deck (using Vulkan) then switched to my gaming desktop for the final few bits where I needed keyboard and mouse to get the job done. It’s easily one my favorite games ever now.
Outer Wilds. Every time it’s on sale I buy a copy as a gift for a friend of mine.
It’s an absolutely impactful experience. One best played blind since the unlocks/progression is knowledge based.
A masterpiece of mystery, story telling and exploration gameplay.
How many copies does your friend have by now?
I’ve bought it about 5 or 6 times now
Bought it after a reccomendation. Thanks for no spoilers, I’m really enjoying it (and intrigued) so far
It’s great. And if you ever get stuck just pull on another thread since many of them overlap.
Feel free to ping me and I’ll do my best to give non spoiler hints if you ever feel truly stuck.
Their advice on pulling another thread is the way to go. Don’t even do something you think is related, just go do something new. You might find it’s related after all.
Can I be a friend of yours lol
I hope it goes on sale for <$10 at some point, it looks really fun
It is fantastic. Just wonderful experience that you can only truly ever have once.
I somewhat joke with my spouse that if I ever have temporary ambesia to have me play it so I can experience afresh again
Are you blind?
Well, the game I’m playing now is to see how many games I can add to my library that I intend to play later.
I’ve actually been playing this for years.
But seriously, I’ve finally got to playing Trombone Champ, fun little rhythm game. Bought the newish RoboCop, which I heard was good, but haven’t started that yet.
I also bought Trombone Champ on the sale! Have not started yet, as I am devoting my attention to a few other games right now and I prefer not to split my game brain toooo many different ways, but excited to as a former band kid who has never played a trombone in real life.
Now that I think of it I feel it was probably the perfect instrument to make this game for. It has Actual Music written for it, as a legit instrument some people devote themselves to and get good at, so there’s definitely enough depth to make a game out of it, but it is also one of the instruments more likely to be funny.
If you’ve ever wanted to reenact famous sword fights from Princess Bride or Zorro, the you should try En Garde. It’s short (probably 3-4 hours for the main story). But the fencing/gameplay is fun.
I wouldn’t recommend at $20, but it’s half off and I thought worth the $10 price tag.

Another fun, but short game I’d recommend is Pepper Grinder. Fun platformer with an interesting gimmick.
En Garde is pretty great, it doesn‘t take itself seriously either and has a ton of slapstick
Yeah, that’s what sold me on it. It was just fun from beginning to end, only issue was that there was one boss that really spiked in difficulty. Otherwise I think it’s a game that knew exactly what it wanted to do and executed it really well.
Like Drill Dozer?
No, you actually use the drill to sorta “swim” through the ground, but when you breach the surface you carry your momentum. So a lot of the gameplay is finding how to hop from area to area. What makes it challenging is that once you start digging you can’t stop until you breach the surface, so some areas (kinda like in Celeste) you are quickly navigating from platform to platform in quick succession.
I’d what the videos on the link if you want a better visual.
That’s sounds really cool. Thanks for explaining.

Divinity 2: Original Sin
About to finish that one after several years, so I picked up that dev’s latest game. I’ve heard it’s even better, so I’m quite excited. DOSin2 is one of the best games I’ve played.
I really tried to not buy anything this time around but the last couple of games I picked up are all pretty difficult for my middle aged brain so I went compulsive shopping again
Euro Truck Simulator is good to turn your brain off to.
Except when parking. I’m bad at parking in real life. Naturally I suck at parking a truck in a video game.
Ishin is great and easy
I hoped to buy Horizon Forbidden West, but the discount isn’t deep enough
I just picked up and started playing Brütal Legend. It’s pretty fun. If you are a fan of Tenacious D or anything else Jack Black has done you will probably enjoy it. It’s basically an Isekai story where you play as JB in a fantasy world inspired by heavy metal aesthetics.
Hollow Knight (it’s currently 50% off).
Nothing has really caught my eye so far. I have a handful of wishlisted games, some of which are on sale, but I just don’t feel compelled to get them. I’m actually considering trying to dig up my old SSI gold-box titles and see if I can get DOSBox or a VM working instead (though housework and farming generally eat up my non-main-job time at the moment).
Also check out the deals thread on !games@lemmy.world
I got Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s 67% off.
I grabbed Graveyard Keeper and I’m enjoying the hell out of it ~15hrs later. It’s kind of like if Stardew Valley dropped the focus on farming and the characters and instead added a tech tree and a very satirical dark-vibe.
We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie. I’m a huge Katamari fan and this port is just fantastic. Great for just relaxing and the soundtrack is fire.
Shadow of War is 90% off, that’s very much worth it
