2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinel” and other short stories by Clarke. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film’s release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music. The soundtrack incorporates numerous works of classical music, including pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and György Ligeti.

The film received diverse critical responses, ranging from those who saw it as darkly apocalyptic to those who saw it as an optimistic reappraisal of the hopes of humanity. Critics noted its exploration of themes such as human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Kubrick the award for his direction of the visual effects. The film is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.

Duelling is just so funny to me. Grown rich men literally risking their life away (and often dying) because they dont want to be called unmanly by some bozo or something.

The swedish one especially, as apparently there was literally no class restriction on who can challenge so some peasant or berserker can literally get rich by duelling nobles and taking their homes.

what do you do when your polyamorous friend who you have a crush on gets into an increasingly monogamous relationship and then when you talk about missing things like saying good night/good morning every day they’re like “I don’t feel very free right now.” and it feels like a very loud cry for help

There is a video going around twitter where a Japanese historian criticizes the US for the atom bombings and not admitting they were war crimes, and by far the least racist common response is “it’s hypocritical for Japan to be saying this”. Like, Jesus Christ, that is not “Japan” speaking to you in that video, it’s just a Japanese person. I am so tired of Yank chauvinists.

    cw: suicide

Sorry to everyone who messaged after my last doomer post I’ve been having a days-long panic attack at this point and haven’t had been able to respond further and the thread got locked

My hands and feet are feeling like pins and needles sometimes now, I’m totally fucked, whatever this is this is the thing that’s gonna kill me, either directly or because I don’t know how much longer I can take it anymore

How likely is it it that it’s MS? It would explain the eye issues I’ve had for a year now. Should I go to the emergency room? Can they help me or is it just gonna be “idk, you’re not bleeding out, go home and pay me 9999999$”

Idk if I can live with another, much worse, disability. Sorry for having a mental breakdown on main I’ve just been in bed alone for days terrified

I missed the wolf thread :(

      Today I forced myself to eat meat for the first time in over a year regardless of how horrible it is cuz I just want this to just be B12 deficiency so bad but its probably not, it makes no sense for me to be deficient ;w;

      I hate this so much

You may well be, some people have trouble digesting B12 and could be deficient even if not vegetarian or vegan (one of the RWN cohosts had this). I’m hoping your symptoms are just due to anxiety and panic attacks, though those are hardest to treat. Either way, can you go to your family doctor or a walk-in? They’ll probably do bloodwork first, which isn’t very expensive to get done and can catch a deficiency. If it’s B12 they can treat that with a couple of shots quicker than a supplement or dietary change would.

The pins and needles may just be a side effect of the adrenaline of your anxiety attack. It happens to me sometimes and actually seizes up all my extremities. It’s something to do with your brain trying to draw the blood out of ur extremities so it creates the pins and needles. I may be wrong about your case but it may be worth considering.

I’m sorry that you’re experiencing weird shit with your body and that it’s got you so anxious. As someone who’s also currently working through a life-changing crisis, I think you should take a step back and breathe. You’re still here and you’re still alive.

Please try to steer your mind away from self-harm. I’m experiencing similar thoughts, but we can’t give up when there’s still life to live. Things may be materially shitty and the outlook is whack, but as long as we’re alive, we can get through this.

If you’re in the US, texting 988 helped talk me down from an extreme anxiety attack over not being able to survive through my circumstance. They’ll listen to you, and offer some suggestions with a trained perspective on helping people through crises. It helped me organized my thoughts and be able to see through the worries.

Edit: They also can provide links to services or resources, or tell you when you should go to the doctor/hospital.

If you’re not in the US, you may be able to look up some similar resources in your country.

Those are some suggestions, it really sucks to hear that you’re going through that. You’ll be okay.

You’re welcome! I’d say give it a shot, it sounds like you could definitely use someone to talk to.

And oh yeah, health anxiety can be extremely scary and overwhelming, that’s valid. But the worst part is not knowing what it is. Our minds are so powerful, we’re able to convince ourselves that we have a terminal illness. I’ve fucking done it, just last year. I thought I absolutely 100% had colon cancer. But it was a hernia, a much less severe issue. I was shaking when I felt my stomach, obsessed over it every day, and started thinking about writing a will, lmao. For 3 months, I felt this way.

I made an appointment to go to the doctor to get this looked at, and it set my mind so much at ease. It’s expensive af, and I still owe those medical bills, but at least I know what I’m dealing with.

Try to pull back and take baby steps to figuring out what you should do to take care of yourself. You can do this, you’ll get through this.

I distinctly remember one time when I was maybe 16, having a shower and thinking about what would happen if everyone’ conditions became better. Then I realised that capitalism would collapse of that was the case, because capitalism requires inequality, and I was like hmm maybe capitalism ain’t so good.

To preface this post, I do electronics work professionally and am quite mechanically inclined.

I have entered full “cheap-ass dad” mode when it comes to musical instruments and accessories.

It started with a piece of shit guitar I bought from a bad friend like 20 years ago and finally decided to play again. No audio out of the jack, the hex-socket on the truss rod was stripped, and the pickup-selector switch was broken off. It also had a plywood body, so I wasn’t worried about fucking it up (and I paid under $100 in the first place). After looking for replacement necks (the fretboard was plastic and the truss rod was fucked) in the US, I almost gave up because they’re like the price of a whole-ass new Squier or Epiphone guitar. I ended up on AliExpress and bought basically a whole guitar in parts (minus the body and strings) for well under $150 (with import fees and shipping). After like a month of waiting on parts and working on it, it plays really well! I learned a lot in the process. It’s still sitting around 99% complete, but the neck showed up almost fully ready to go (I really just had to finish the wood, ream out the holes for the machine heads/tuners, and attach it).

So, now I’m looking at everything else’s price tags and saying, “I could do that.” I’m now building my own DIY pedals. I was at the music store the other day, looked at Ernie Ball selling three tiny patch cables for $25, and said “I could do that.” After a lot of searching around online, I almost gave up again because just the 90 degree jacks are like $7 each unless I’m buying in bulk and even that won’t get me cheaper than the bullshit Ernie Ball cables. But, then I remembered AliExpress.

Basically, fuck the entire western industry around music, I’m gonna do it myself with China’s help.

My dad started restoring old guitars for fun. I’m unsure of how many he has atm but I think my mom keeps him at or around 30. He just hunts around on facebook groups and ebay for junkers and then smashes them together with a few ail-express parts here and there.

Badass! I’m handy enough with an iron to make my own audio cables (I actually enjoy making xlr), I love playing music and tinkering with electronics… always wanted to get into DIY pedals but not sure I can invest the time. Big respect. Any learning resources you’d recommend?
