I was wondering earlier today what were the first cubes to achieve some milestones, such as the Guhong with torpedoes and such. After a quick search, it appears to me that the first cube to implement MagLev as the default was the MoYu Weilong WR M 2021, but I couldn’t find any authoritative source on that, so I’m just left wondering.

Is anyone aware of any earlier cubes that implemented this technology?

Also, what is your earliest bought speedcube? It’s pretty crazy to compare my Zhanchi to a WRM V9 in 2024, especially with remembering how stickered cubes were the norm back then.

    I don’t know about maglev, but when I got started, the cubes were just known by letters. I believe the first ones that I bought were Type A-3, Type C, and Type F.

    I’m a newer cuber, I started in summer last year. I feel like I’ve gone through the tech at a way faster speed than you guys that have been doing it for years.

    First cube was a stickered POS that we just had lying around the house for years, worse than an official Rubik’s cube to turn. I learned how to solve on that and bought a cheap “Speed Cube” off Ali Express which turned better, you could actually use finger pushes!

    Upgraded to an RS3M 2020 and thought it was AMAZING in comparison. It’s now sat in the pocket of my work jacket and feels like it’s lubed with sand.

    I got a Tornado V2 in November and WOW I’m all aboard the maglev train. So much to adjust! It took a good 10 seconds off my solve times instantly.

    I’m eagerly awaiting the cubes that use anti gravity tech, or whatever the new thing is

      I feel like I’m in a similar boat, in a way. Though I’ve been cubing for the past 10 years, I’ve taken a long break of some 4 years and returned to cubing only in early 2023, when I bought the exact same RS3M 2020, which I used in the first comp I went to.

      So all the new tech, like magnets, MagLev, ballcore and stuff all kind of appeared at the same time, for me.

        Magnets are a game changer for me, absolutely love em. But it’s added more points of failure to the state of the cube. I don’t know if you’ve seen my post (I wrote it straight after this comment) but magnets dropping out of corners is something I hadn’t experienced on my RS3M.

        That said, I love my super strong corner magnets on my WRM V9, where I can tap the top layer and it auto aligns. So for me, when they’re done well they’re great but can be a sore point if it’s done in a cheap way.

        It’s kinda like my Nokia phone back in the day was indestructible, but I treat my Pixel 7a with kid gloves lol

          I did, and I’ve been postponing replying to it since I’ve had a long week. But I’ll soon give you my thoughts on it under the post itself. But, regarding your comment here, this is kind of the reason why I prefer to take my RS3M 2020 out and about and use the WRM V9 at home.
