This has traditionally been my favorite type of anime basically ever since I first got into anime, but lately I’ve just felt like I need it more. Chances are that most things that people would mention in this thread are things I’ve already seen or tried, or things I already plan on watching — but honestly, just mention them anyways, because they could be useful for someone else, and I’m not opposed to rewatching or prioritizing things.
Still, I might particularly like some more “hidden gem” type recommendations.
Gekkan-Shoujo Nozaki-Kun (2014, 12 Episodes + 1 OVA)
Hinamatsuri (2018, 12 Episodes)
Jarinko Chie (1981, Movie. The TV anime is currently getting translated, but is still incomplete)
K-On (2007, 2010, 26+13 Episodes + 2 OVA + Movie)
Nichijou (2011, 26 Episodes)
Ya gotta love the old KyoAni classics. I’d heard of Nozaki-kun but hadn’t put it on the planning list, those other two are compleetely unfamiliar. Sounds like good stuff!
Nozaki-kun is peak
Flying Witch was something that came out in 2016, I’m pretty sure it was well-received, then kind of disappeared (I also stopped paying attention to anime communities around that time). You may give it a try, I rated it highly but I don’t trust my old scores sometimes. Hell, I may give it another try.
Never heard of it before, sounds like an interesting premise, sounds pretty poggers to me!
Azumanga I’ve been meaning to rewatch because I want to make note of all the points when Kimura appears and edit them out
Delicious in Dungeon is available with Japanese audio description and Norwegian subs on Netflix so for that alone I should watch it
the masterful cat is depressed again today is my favorite thing ever.
it’s a very peaceful slice of life, about an office worker who sucks at life skills and has a giant cat. The cat does the cooking, shopping, housework, etc. It’s a 10/10 for me but it probably only works if you are a cat person
It just got an animated adaptation which is frankly a bit low budget but I still really liked it.
Looks fun!
Hidamari sketch is the 🐐 of the category imo
I still haven’t seen the last season of that, nor the specials. I remember properly starting Hidamari Sketch during lockdown, not just as a soothing ritual for the turbulent time, but also for I was to move to a school dorm later that year, and I was hoping that my first time living alone would be just like the cartoon on my computer screen…
…As you might expect, it really wasn’t, honestly it was kinda shit, but God I wish I could be that naïve again.
So yeah, GOAT indeed. Hidamari really is a special little series. Shaft also made Maria Holic and Soremachi, which I also enjoyed a lot, and Pani Poni Dash, which I completed despite not being particularly fond of it.
- Yuru Camp (3 seasons)
- Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge
- Non Non Biyori (3 seasons)
- New Game! (2 seasons)
- Mitsuboshi Colors
- Do It Yourself!! (Banger OP btw)
- Demi-chan wa Kataritai
- Comic Girls
- Aria the Animation (3 seasons plus a bunch of OVAs and movies and such)
- Amanchu! (same mangaka as Aria)
- Amaama to Inazuma (most famous for this clip)
edit: fixed typo
Hell yeaaaaaah honestly
I’m waiting on watching Yuru Camp’s third season but honestly from the seasons I have seen (plus the movie where they’re all grown up) it’s definitely one of the GOATs. Non Non Biyori I’ve seen de pied en cap, it is 100% my favorite anime of all time. Mitsuboshi Colors, which I’m assuming you got autocorrected on, I saw just recently with my mom and aaaagh it is such a banger, I plan on watching Hitoribocchi as well since that’s the same original creator. Aria I have seen the first season plus half of the second season, and I have two volumes of the manga in the original Japanese, it is such a great and imaginative world but it’s also a fairly long series isn’t it. Amanchu I saw by myself recently-ish and honestly it was kinda middle of the road for me, but maybe I was being a bit harsh though.
Otherwise, New Game and Do It Yourself are already on my planning list, and I am especially excited about Do It Yourself, because as you say, banger OP, and it has such a unique and pretty style, right? And I have heard of Tanaka-kun and the monster girls one but I hadn’t put them on my planning list until now.
Which leaves just Comic Girls and Amaama To Inazuma. I don’t think I’ve heard of either of those before, and that clip of the latter is very cute and catchy. So it seems we are eating well aren’t we folks
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Probably already seen it but Toradora was fun
Weey I haven’t seen it chestna but it is on my planning list br
The most recent anime i watched in this genre was All Saints Street i didn’t watch everything but i liked it a lot, the animation was very good and the characters were cute :3 it had a different style than other animes, a little “cartoony” i guess?
Ooh, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before!
Outside of what’s already been mentioned, I like Barakamon a lot
Yeah, Barakamon is honestly fucking awesome and one of my favorites. I’ve seen it twice.
Hell yeah, I feel like it rarely gets the respect it deserves
I just realized my taste in anime is horribly unwholesome
In what way?
I realized that 99% of my watch list is post-apocalyptic, horror or 2000s noir in some way.
The most wholesome shows I can come up with are Humanity has Declined, Haibane Renmei, Girls Last Tour and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. All of which are wholesome in principle, but the settings are messed up.
I guess Aria is wholesome only?
I recently discovered that anime planet is way better at recommending great older shows compared to all the other sites. So you could look up shows you like there and see what they recommend.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou pog, Aria pog too. I haven’t heard of Humanity has Declined that I can remember, the others I’ve heard of and sound a little interesting but more sort of long-term…
I’m not familiar with Anime Planet, I’ll look into it.
