why agree to a 9 PM debate then
Hubris, the handlers wanted to prove that he could do it. They failed horribly.
Minimally competent handlers would have scheduled some state visit to a vastly different time zone right before. Have him spend a week in a place where local 1 PM is 9 PM eastern time, then ship him back while his brain still works.
He spent the week prior to the debate prepping for it at camp David lmao
The last thing they wanted and want is for the public to hear “sundowning” and “Biden” in the same sentence. And even though Biden liked like dog shit in the debate - as far as I know no lib pundits have mentioned the s word. And I doubt many right-wing pundits have either. Their guy is world salad city on a good day.

It’s wild they didn’t just record the debate in the morning. There was no audience, no one would have known.
I mean, the Trump campaign would need to agree with that and agree to keep it a secret along with them.
Trump would have negotiated to have it live; there’s no reason he’d want the networks to have time to fact check for the broadcast.
Right but that would have been easier to explain away than 90 minutes of being the sleepiest man alive.
…But…there’s NO advantage to the Trump campaign agreeing with that. They want voters to see 90 minutes of Biden being the sleepiest man alive, so they’d never agree and they’d probably make a scandal of the Biden campaign even asking. So, like, they can’t just do that.
Not to mention CNN would also have to agree, and everyone would have to be sure there would be no leaks of this big secret that it was recorded ahead of time, which is impossible. There’s just no way to do it.
