Now would be a great time for him to make good on his threat and pull all US diplomatic support. I think we’re still obligated to provide some military equipment because of Congressional acts, but he needs to veto any additional bills for Israel.

Leahy law forbids sending weapons when human rights violations are committed with them.

Biden is already required by law to block arms exports to israel. Stopping it is legally super duper easy

Then why is no one calling out the congress responsible for it? Biden didn’t pass or fund this. He isn’t pushing back against it hard enough. But he’s not the one that passed it. Or threatened to campaign against him when he just delayed delivery. I don’t see anyone calling out mike Johnson.

Never implied he wasn’t. Only implied that the obsessive focus on him is suspicious and short-sighted if someone actually wanted it to improve things in gaza. He is a small part of the equation and the problem. Mike Johnson has already said that he will do everything it takes to continue the genocide in Gaza. That he and his House of Representatives is aiding in supplying directly.

Congress did not force him to circumvent congress to sell Netanyahu weapons for genocide. Biden did that all by his lonesome, without his hands being tied in any way whatsoever. Biden’s administration does not have to abuse our veto at the UN to run interference for Netanyahu. And Joe Biden did not have to deny that a genocide is even happening in Gaza.

Congress didn’t force him to do any of that.

How is the performance supposed to benefit him? As soon as the “red line” is crossed and nothing happens, it makes him seem weak. Usually when being performative, you say something that has a plausible excuse when it doesn’t happen - or something that can’t be acted on until you’re elected. This was very poorly conceived, then.

You’re quoting a law that doesn’t apply here because US laws exist to be selectively enforced in the interests of the US. It sucks, but it’s been this way since at least WWII. Unless the Secretary of State decides to break decades of bipartisan support for Israel, this law is meaningless.

Policy is not necessarily backed by law. The US supports Israel because they’re a friendly power in the Middle East. It’s in the interests of the US to have friends in oil-rich regions. Israel is a check against aggressive Muslim nations (e.g. Iran).

Given that Christianity is playing far too big a role in politics, it makes sense that Christians would more closely align with Jews than Muslims.

Biden didn’t order this, but he had to know that giving money to Israel would cause this. If he didn’t, he’s a complete fool. We hope this will provoke Biden to declare war on Israel and order destruction of military targets belonging to the IDF, but it probably won’t, and if it doesn’t, well that’s hypocrisy.

If only diplomacy was that straightforward…

Israel doesn’t need the money in order to keep doing what they’re doing. USA needs a middle eastern ally more than Israel needs the USA.

Ukraine, however, would collapse if it weren’t for the money USA is providing (allowing with many other countries).

This bill that was signed to send money to Israel also provided money to Ukraine. You would not get one without the other.

USA needs a middle eastern ally more than Israel needs the USA.

Not at all. Israel has been a liability for US policies not a bonus. Israeli actions undermined US efforts in Iraq and undermined US-Iranian diplomacy. The US defending Israel has generated ill will worldwide, undermined US rhetoric and soft power, and made the US the source of terrorist attacks. What have we gotten from it? Does Israel help in Iraq or Afghanistan wars? Does it vote the way we want at the UN? No and no.

Something between ‘supplying the bombs used for genocide’ and ‘declaring war on Israel’ would be just right

edit: a surprising amount of disagreement with this comment

Yea, but you failed to answer the question. At which point did Joe call up the pilots and pass grid coords to drop the bombs?

            But blame where it belongs.

Mental gymnastics to try to justify genocide? New lows of lemmy

            Bizarre.

After years of not being successful with the hunter biden story trumpists are probably celebrating with how easy it is to turn people away from biden by just throwing shit about the Israel war at him to make it look as if he’s somehow responsible for it…

From the party that brought you “Moving the American Embassy Israel” and “assassinating a high ranking Iranian official” comes “Blame Joe Biden for everything”

From the party that brought you “we wish we could do something but the republicans won’t let us” comes “the republicans are worse, so what we’re doing is the best you’re going to get.”

Maybe we need another four years of Trump. Either way, fuck em, I’m not voting.

The fact you think anyone in this thread is justifying a genocide paints a clear picture that you aren’t here to discuss in good faith.

This a sockpuppet account for .ml or hexbear?

“Said one group.” That language is suspiciously vague. Do you know what group said that quote?

The statement on top was from a while ago, the White House officials said they were examining the issue yesterday and AFAIK haven’t given an update.

I hope he does the right thing, I don’t particularly have that much faith in him to do the right thing.

Except they will keep saying it’s an “accident” so it won’t cross Biden’s “red line” which is what? Not sending weapons but still sending money? He already did that

Biden can’t do anything about this, but make sure to vote for him so trump doesn’t get into office and put a plan to exercise executive power into action.

I’m voting party for socialism and liberation this November and you can too.
