Touhou is just Japan’s Homestuck. There is source material, but the vast majority of the content that people assume is canon comes from fanwork
There are a lot of official manga too, and many details about the story are in .txt files inside the game folder.
All I know is after playing I got REALLY good at navigating crowds.
