Uh, in interviews he said he had no idea what was really going on. Then it came out that he did know what was going on and was even on Weinstein’s “red flag” list, for fear he would talk to reporters.

That is not internet rumor, that is easily confirmable public knowledge.

You clearly refuse to do any actual research and just want to believe what you want to believe.

*Edit: Your celebrity suck up is embarrassing.

I think you’re the one who needs to do some research, cause that’s not even close to reality. He said he knew Weinstein was sleezy, then 1 person said they went crying to Affleck after something happened with Weinstein, which resulted in people like YOU claiming this means Affleck knew he was raping people. Then that same person (Rose McGowan) clarified in an interview that she never meant to imply she told Affleck she was raped or anything like that, she said “It’s just more to illustrate the point of this continual thing of everybody knowing and everybody being part of it, unwittingly or proactively.” which Affleck flat out agreed with, the point being that hundreds if not thousands of people knew Weinstein was sketchy and weren’t collectively saying anything (until they were).

And to illustrate the point of this meme and why people think you’re an asshole this also bears mentioning: “Affleck has both anxiety and depression, and has taken antidepressants since age 26. He is a recovering alcoholic and follows a 12-step program. He said he used alcohol to alleviate a constant feeling of “discomfort” and remarked that it “took me a long time to fundamentally, deeply, without a hint of doubt, admit to myself that I am an alcoholic.” There is a history of addiction and mental illness in Affleck’s family.”

To be clear, I don’t think anyone here is a celebrity suck up. They’re just empathetic humans seeing other humans struggle and wanting them to be OK or see how we can help. It’s the human condition, we shouldn’t discourage that.

Separately Ben Affleck may or may not be a shitty human being if what you said was true, but in the moment he still showed he was a depressed human, and other humans want to help. Not because they’re sycophants, but because they’re good people who want to help.

It really has to do a number on the brain to be so justifiably paranoid at all times.

That pic of Jonah Hill comes to mind, where he’s just absolutely not having it when he thinks someone is running up and recording him, and then relaxes when he realizes it’s Dicaprio.

And then you realize that the moment was captured on camera, so he actually was being surveilled at that exact moment.

A lot of celebrities are just terrible humans, but surely at least part of that is from the influence of being surrounded and surveilled by equally terrible people at all times. Not an excuse, just a sad observation.

This might be one of the few good things about widespread AI adoption -the value of real-life images and videos must be depreciating when anyone can just generate whatever images they want and most of the audience won’t know or care for the difference.

Or worse (for the paparazzi) - audiences will assume or become convinced that the real photos are AI generated anyway.

With GenAI maybe we can stop taking so many meaningless pictures and videos of people just living their goddamn lives, or people doing dangerous or stupid shit for clout…

        Right? Maybe? … I hope?

Allegedly, he was aware of Harvey Weinstein’s abuse, at least according to Rose McGowan. And since a lot of people are reactionary as fuck, since she accused him of being aware, then they act and behave as if he was undoubtedly aware and complicit in it.

            I wasn’t /s

But seriously, it is far easier being on the outside, pointing and casting blame, but for us old enough to remember all the people who were blackballed, run out of the business, and even murdered for exposing sexual abuse, it is hard to tell.

And on top of that, there are cases where a third party has exposed the abuse, to which both the victim and perpetrator deny the accusations, and it just ends up terribly for the whistleblower.

Yet, back to the point, we’re on reddit lemmy, where nuance goes to die.

Y’all are being way too harsh. I’m sure he has a really good reason for why he enabled and protected Harvey Weinstein’s rapery. Something so convincing that we’d all say, “you were absolutely right to help blow up the lives of fellow artists. You’re really not a piece of shit!”

Eta: Apparently, my sarcasm was too subtle. The fact that people aren’t catching onto that is incredibly depressing because that means this was a believably shitty take. I really thought the last sentence was a dead giveaway…

It’s about cultivating and maintaining the energy required to “hate” someone you’ll never meet and who will most likely never know your name…

Like… What is even the point? How would that be useful in a person’s day to day life. Just my 2 cents
