White House officials have spent weeks trying to justify their deportation of Abrego Garcia, even after admitting in court that sending him to El Salvador was an “administrative error,” claiming with no evidence that he is a violent criminal and gang member.
At one point, the Department of Homeland Security posted online an order of protection that Jennifer Vasquez Sura had sought, but later abandoned, against her husband. That order contained Vasquez Sura’s home address, unredacted.
“I don’t feel safe when the government posts my address, the house where my family lives, for everyone to see, especially when this case has gone viral and people have all sorts of opinions,” Vasquez Sura told The Washington Post. “So, this is definitely a bit terrifying. I’m scared for my kids.”
Vasquez Sura, a U.S. citizen, is now staying in an undisclosed location with her three children while Abrego Garcia remains thousands of miles away, despite a Supreme Court order requiring the U.S. government to facilitate his return. Both the Trump administration and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele say that Abrego Garcia will not be coming back to the U.S., and Vasquez Sura has received hateful comments and taunts on social media.
I really wish the media would stop lying for the Trump administration. It wasn’t a mistake, they deported him intentionally.
And it isn’t deportation. Deportation is sending someone to another country, generally the one they originally came from and where they hopefully have citizenship. This is paying some completely unrelated country to imprison someone with no legal avenue for due process or release. The best description I can come up with is kidnapping and imprisonment abroad.
ETA: it’s been pointed out that Mr Garcia is originally from El Salvador so this isn’t one of the cases where we’re sending Venezuelans to an unrelated country. It’s still super fucked up since the dude had legal status and no criminal record and no due process. Is El Salvador just a lawless dictatorship? The CIA just completely fucked up Latin America for generations :(
In this case I thought he was actually from there. The issue was that he had legal status and he hasn’t been found guilty of a crime related to affiliation to MS13.
Oh, you’re right. He is originally from El Salvador. I think I may be confusing him with someone else, I thought they sent some Venezuelans to El Salvador.

Garcia is from El Salvador, though. Doesn’t excuse what was done to him, though, since he was given withholding of removal status in 2019 due to the danger he faced if he returned there.

Yup. He was getting deported. Republicans say they just sent him to the wrong country because they are stupid. So that means no Republican can get in trouble. Because “I’m too stupid to get in trouble” is still a god damn thing.

Credible outlets can (and should) only report what is verifiable. They can’t (and shouldn’t) speculate or say things they can’t back up / prove. This includes motives.
People really need to learn how journalism works and stop bemoaning that every headline everywhere isn’t filled to the brim with speculative rhetoric.
“Mainstream media is complicit because they don’t use the charged rhetoric I demand” is a purity test attitude I’ve grown quite sick of around here.
Then it seems that they should have left out “mistakenly” if they only report verifiable things that they can prove, including motives.
The media needs to not treat this as normal or blundering. MAGA know what they are doing: making this country intolerable to immigrants.
This isn’t a purity test, it’s criticism. That’s a perfectly fine thing to do.
It’s not "the media"s job to tell anyone how to feel about anything. It’s not the media’s job to say “this is good” or “this is bad”. It IS their job to report the facts, paint the picture as accurately as they can with those facts, and leave it up to the reader/viewer to make up their own minds.
Putting things into context is one thing, but treating any situation as inherently good, evil, desired, undesired, etc is not their job; they’re just there to report what’s happening. Goddamn I hate what cable news has done to journalism.
The administration has admitted to an “administrative error” which makes “mistakenly” an accurate description.
Which is why I said the media is lying for the Trump administration: this is the lie that the administration told, and the media repeats it for them.
The fact is that they didn’t give a fuck if they could deport him or not.
Saying he was “mistakenly deported” makes it sound like they cared one bit. There was no error; the judge issued an order asking for any evidence of that, and he got crickets back.
That “journalism works” is a bold statement while Jeff Bezos is dismantling the Washington Post and the New York Times has become a word game and recipe site that does reporting on the side.
