I recently lost a very precious family member and I am having a tough time coping. Is there a Lemmy-equivalent community for Pet Loss? I’ve done a fair amount of searching but haven’t found anything active or similar. Apologies if this has been asked for the hundredth time.

Losing a dear pet never is easy, but try to find solace in the idea you where his whole life (of the biggest part of it). You gave your pet the best he could have had.

There is now forever a paw marked on your heart.

I have 2 cats, but have a room dedicated to sheltering old cats. Tl;dr I’m a palliative care unit for a local shelter and I deal with a lot of loss.

What keeps me going is that I do truly believe I give them the best “end” of their life and that even of their stays are short. I gave them all the love I have.

Feel free to reach out to me of u wanna talk, share, reminesce or just simply ask questions.

Thank you for your kind words. It gives me a degree of solace to believe as you do: I believe I gave her the best life I possibly could. I’ve made mistakes, but I always did everything with her health in mind. They’re just never around long enough.

Thank you again, I may reach out to you soon. Her story deserves to be shared; she was such a strong little creature.

    Sorry for your loss

I’m sure we can give a go at helping you here, if you can’t find a more suitable community

Thank you, kindly. Your offer to help means a great deal to me, however I don’t want my grief to affect those in this community who are vulnerable to such emotions. I also understand it’s not the nicest of topics and most people would prefer to avoid it.

If there is no current community for it, I suppose I may have to make one myself.

I’ve been through it multiple times. Time will wipe away the hurt and leave you with only the happy memories, but it’s gonna hurt for now. I’ve got your back. I’m sure you were a great person for your friend and that they were lucky to have you. I wish you the best.

I’ve only lost one pet so far, and it was a family pet. I plan on having pets of my own in the future. Do you find that it gets easier? I didn’t see our family pet regularly but it was still sad as heck when it happened.

It gets easier but it takes time for it to happen. One of mine, I couldn’t think of him without tears for a full year. I still miss him, but now when I think of him I’m happy that I knew him.

Sorry friend, that’s fucking rough. Here’s to remembering the good times, and hoping you heal. If you want to share any photos and have a laugh or a cry, I’m sure the community here would laugh or cry with ya.

I feel like the various cat communities are already a good place for this as it will happen to all of us.

I’m sorry for your loss. I very much know your pain.

Very sorry for your loss. We lost a fuzzy friend in October. He was 15 years old. My wife found a place online that could print a picture of him on a pillow, and it’s nice to see that on the bed :)
