No, the connection today was “starts of swimming strokes”.
So they had breast[stroke], butter[fly], free[style], and back[stroke].
Although interestingly, all of these except butterfly are often shortened to the word as it appeared in the puzzle. Butterfly gets shortened to “fly”.

It was the “starts of swimming strokes. So buttter is the start of butterfly stroke, freestyle stroke, etc.
I see. Must have misread the name. Although I thought the other 3 were written separate.
