Diskless consoles weaken consumer rights. In an industry where fully digital games can and do pop out of existence without warning, nobody should accept this
100%, your console will be useless after the planned obsolescence
Haven’t bought a physical copy of a game in well over 7 years, on pc though. No experience of games disappearing on me, is the case different for console?
So this isn’t that relevant to games released recently because they’re somewhat actively maintained. The older the game gets, the more dire the situation is. For example, it is nigh impossible to find Soul Reaver for PC. It’s unlisted on Steam and GOG have it as “Coming Soon” with a message about Squenix fixing something. EA is the biggest culprit for straight up abandoning games and leaving no option to get them. The Sims 2 for one.
It’s easier to see the issue when you go looking for it
I want to shout out OldGamesDownload for maintaining a repository of abandoned games.
So far it mostly happens to mobile games and stuff like the Oculus, but that’s largely I think because the medium enables that kind of intermediary malfeasance or whatever you want to call it.
Until we can own, play, resell, and share our digital games without anyone’s permission, it’s going to keep getting worse for consumers
I haven’t build in a cd drive in my PCs in the last few years. I had a BD drive in-between, but barely used it and it’s just sitting on a shelf right now, because I can’t be bothered to build it in and so far I haven’t missed it. So far all digital stores, be it Steam, gog and even Epic, uplay and Origin have not eaten the games I purchased (and in the case of Epic, claimed).
Only games I can’t play are MMO games that died. Which is not exactly a problem of the store front or the plattform.

It’s a disc-less wonder! And it looks like an air purifier, according to Madlittlepixel. (Better than the Playstation 5’s robot vagina, I guess.)
“P-please be gentle, Xbox-kun”
“Don’t worry, PS-chan” he caressed her cheek “it will be fine. I love you.”
“I love you too…” she softly whispered, letting a loud squeak go a moment later — her cheekbones blushing of a gentle, celestial blue
— Fuck you for making me think about this cursed crap
It’s time’s like this I wish I were illiterate.
This is fake, right? How am I supposed to lay the console horizontally?
Also the Lay-out looks low quality and the text seems off.
This slide wasn’t meant to be seen by the public. It’s a rough draft for a product that isn’t supposed to be announced until mid 2024.
Makes sense.
Maybe on a wine rack
That controller is ugly as sin.
Oh God, I hate it. This might be the old Zune user in me, but I like my futuretech with angles, not curves
An all-digital future isn’t surprising in the slightest coming from Microsoft, although 2024 is much sooner than most would anticipate it. I guess we might see a detachable disc drive, but if there is one, it would surely not be bundled with the console.
Their business model is clearly centered around Game Pass nowadays, physical media sales must have slowed down significantly over the last few years (they also have significantly fewer limited run releases than Nintendo/Sony) and they have decided to forgo using larger size Blu-Rays to accommodate for full games on disc anyways. As a fervent supporter of physical media (because you can get deals outside of just the one monopoly / digital store, you can buy used or you can loan/borrow games, or even get backwards compatible games that are not available digitally), this is another “slap in the face”, but again I kind of expected it, sooner or later, coming from Microsoft.
mate people literally use stolen credit cards to grift the money out of develpers and get game keys and sell them. if your using the DIGITAL STORE to get your digital games your the one getting cond
No mention of Hall effect sticks.
Modular sticks, but no mention of Hall effect, yeah. Will probably have to rely on a company like Gulikit to make a kit.Edit: After reading more comments online, the “modular” aspect could be the swappable sticks like on the Elite controller and not the entire thumbstick assembly like the PlayStation Edge controller.
Disc games are cheaper though
I hate this direction
I see the sticks will still be shite.
So, if I want to buy Xbox in a few months, should I just wait for this?
Any answer you get is speculative.
No, the Series X is still a better deal.
No disc drive, no buy.
That’s what the Series X is for.
This is the mid-gen refresh of the Series X
Not if it’s discless it’s not.
I’d never get a disc-less Xbox console since some of the backwards compatible games are still disc only. Having access to my whole collection of games was a huge selling point for me to get a Series X.
XCan
Good, launch that and kill the Series S.
What does killing the Series S look like? A very large chunk of the Xbox Series install base are Series Ss. Microsoft is not going to be telling them they aren’t getting games anymore, it’s too large of a crowd for them to alienate. What incentive could Microsoft give them to upgrade when they could just buy a PS5?
Microsoft also has an incentive to keep selling the Series S to keep the pressure on game developers to develop for it. It’s a lot easier for them to demand feature parity when half of their install base is using the weaker console.
They’ll still get games, it just won’t be allowed to roadblock titles like Baldur’s Gate 3.
If someone wants to make a game for an underpowered system, they absolutely can, but it’s time for it to be left behind. It was never a good idea.
