Howdy! Figured I would just put this here quick to start contributing. I’m hoping this place can get as popping as r/ultralight.
Anywho, I have the vast majority of my menu planned out but have a couple of holes to fill in. My partner and I are planning to do it in 8 days but will see if we can actually get it done in 7 (or take a day for just lounging in the middle of nowhere and use the full 8 days). It’s going to be a bit of food to carry but I’m trying to focus on keeping calories per ounce above 130 averaged over the day. I used to through in a complete cookie, but stopped because of how much gas they gave me. It was actually pretty uncomfortable.
I am wondering if anyone here has tried the green belly meals-2-go and if so how are they? Or if taking an extra Snickers bar and calling it good would make more sense. Thanks in advance!
Hello and welcome! I’m attempting the UHT this year too 😀 I haven’t tried any of the green belly stuff but I do personally have a soft spot for snickers bars, they check all the boxes for me. You mention r/ultralight, can I ask what brought you here?
I came on over here when my Reddit Is Fun app stopped working and finding it super worth it. And yeah Snickers bars do really hit all the boxes. When are you trying to do the UHT?
Ah ok, it was Apollo for me and I agree, the Lemmy ecosystem is very usable and has grown appreciably even in the last week. RIF was for Android, right? Which app are you using now?
I’m going the first week of September; would’ve done the last week of August but the Uintas got an above average amount of snow last season so I’m delaying a week to give it as much time to dry out as possible.
I’ll be on the Highline Trail this year in September.
How many calories/day do you have planned? Clothing and food are the two things I don’t have quite dialed-in.
I usually shoot for about 2,500 calories per day. Right now, I am thinking about 120-140 calories per ounce. Breakfast is a granola with chocolate, chia seeds, freeze-dried fruit, and whole powdered milk (also do a coffee hot chocolate mocha thing that is always a great extra way to get extra calories). Dinner is freeze dried meal, Sakura’s rice and beans, and Mac and cheese (using cheese powder from Amazon). Snacks are mix of trail mix, Snickers, and Ritz cheese cracker sandwiches. I’m debating bringing some flour tortillas and peanut butter to make some trail mix wrap things but haven’t fully landed on it yet.
Clothing wise, I have a tropic comfort II sunshirt and strider pro shorts. I have a primaloft active fleece (their answer to alpha direct) and decathlon forclaz 100 hoodie for insulation. Also have a pair of Copperfield windpants for the wind. Got a versalite for my rain jacket. Feel pretty solid about my clothing set up for the most part. Only newish piece is the fleece which I haven’t used but one time in North Carolina this past memorial day. Going to bring sunblock for my legs as I’m more comfortable with the shorts over pants (I sweat something fierce and I’m just personally more comfortable with some sunscreen). Hopefully I can get my write up up before you head out just in case.
Pretty similar to what I was thinking.
-For worn, Walmart shorts + Columbia Silver Ridge
-For carried, Dancepants + KUIU Peloton 97 + Montbell Superior Puffy + Versalite
The fleece is also new to me this season, though I’ve used it around 7 nights so far. I still prefer a windjacket, but I haven’t really been in conditions cold enough to necessitate hiking in the KUIU.
I splurged and got a bunch of PackIt Gourmet meals - my favorite. Just have to test other foods (bars, snacks). I’m allergic to nuts, so that eliminates the majority of 130+ calorie/ounce options.
