Authorities are raising the alarm about a social media challenge in which people eat extremely spicy chips and attempt to avoid eating or drinking anything for as long as possible
The One Chip Challenge chip sells for about $10 and comes wrapped in a sealed foil pouch that is enclosed in a coffin-shaped cardboard box.
People pay $10 for a chip that tastes deliberately nasty? People are weird.
Yeah, I can handle habaneros (at least Red Savina level) and those 2 reasons are why I never had the desire to try this. I’ve heard people say it smells and tastes gross. Then again, I’m put off by the vinegar/fermented taste of most hotsauces and many seem to like it (even in context where the taste doesn’t really have something to mix into).
Even those spicy noodles I never tried due to higher cost and needing to order online, and I’m sure those actually taste good. Then again, if I want to “challenge” myself I could always just take normal food and add enough home-grown peppers (when I have them) or flakes/powder for free. Though I wouldn’t even go too far with that.
Also this reminds me of a video by the BPL, where a guy had disgusting liquor (Malort) before the disgusting hot chip. For charity.
These things were rough for me. I took a little pinky nail sized nibble and felt like dying for 15 minutes.
My friend ate an entire chip in one throw, paused, said, “yeah it’s kinda hot” and then just went on as if nothing happened. No clue how.
I think there may be some genetic variation. I am pretty weak when it comes to spicy food but some kinds I seem to be immune to, for example those hot M&Ms I cannot taste but my friends did.
You might be right. There are three currently known different kinds of spicy.
Still plenty of unknowns at play though. There might be situations whereby an apparent immunity is suddenly lacking.
Thank you, that is a rabbit hole I am excited to investigate further!
