I had completely forgotten about the No Alternative compilation, until I listened to a podcast about it the other day. I remember playing the CD a fair bit, but I don’t seem to have it now. I might have borrowed it from someone and given it back.
Posting this track because I was (and still am) a big fan of Kiwi bands of the era, and I was pretty stoked that The Verlaines and Straitjacket Fits, two of my favourites, were included. As far as I know, Heavy 33 didn’t get a release anywhere else and only popped up later on their “Greatest” compliation.
Vaguely remember seeing this album around. Thanks for the hidden track reminder - any recollection of the song name?
According to Wikipedia’s track listing, it was Sappy (which might at the time have had the name “verse chorus verse”) :)
Correct. Great song.
Late reply, but apparently it was also known as “Verse, Chorus, Verse” which rings a bell from that time of life.
I also came across the No Alternative website. Put a lot of this album into perspective for me! Things I sorta knew where going on but make a lot more sense in hindsight and just being old enough to follow it.
Thank you for this, I hadn’t dug very deep, and that was a fascinating read. :) I didn’t realise that was why the Nirvana song was hidden away, or all the accompanying media with it!
This shall be what I listen to today at work :) thank you for reminding me about it and the link!
