    Obligatory I didn’t read the article.

    It’s obviously T9 Word’s fault. All these kids out here texting with T9 word, can’t expect anyone to be spelling when they can T9 their way through life.

      While I dont doubt that texting has had something to do with it, there was a shift from phonics based reading to “balanced literacy” about 30 years ago. The approach has obviously failed in a pretty horrible way.

      Boomers were the last well educated generation. After they got uppity in the 60s, the elite destroyed the education system to make sure that would never happen again

      I couldn’t read the OP paywalled article but other similar articles mostly cite students from low-income families struggle the most. My guess is there are now more kids living in low-income families than before, and declining literacy rates is just a byproduct of growing wealth inequality.

        As I recall, over half of all American children live in homes with a household income below living wage.
