[Feature Request] Vote for a Proton VPN App for Ubuntu Touch on ProtonMail’s UserVoice Forum
https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/932836-proton-vpn/suggestions/47523629-ubuntu-touch-app
No one cares about Ubuntu touch anymore. If anything, we care about post market os or Debian.
Explain why post market os and Mobian are better.
Because they are not Ubuntu /s
True I feel like some people in the Linux community may mistakenly think that canonical is the one running the show when it was ubports who resumed development.
Because they have bigger teams and are using regular Linux tech.
Fair enough, I will have to research the other distros.
What is the install base of Ubuntu Touch even? Are those numbers somewhere?
I would say for the pixel 3axl it is 118mb. You can check by downloading the ubports installer. Also the apps are pretty small in size like 10<1 mbs or under.
Sorry, I meant install base meaning users. How many devices have downloaded or installed it?
According to the number of installs on the openstore Ubuntu Touch has had 434,650 installs.
So I’m guessing there are likely to be thousands of users in the wild.
Link?
I checked the numbers within the app.
However I wasn’t able to find them on the website.
Here are stats for the app categories:
Edit: I took a screenshot for you
I’d rather get a proper desktop Linux GUI, as it is on Windows
Exactly
Better yet, an adaptive GTK4 app. Hit two birds with one strone.
I rather want a linux native email client.
Since when?
I guess its finally out of closed alpha. Nice.
I hope it"s not an electron shitty webapp.
Unfortunately it is.
Hopefully they won’t discontinue the Linux bridge, as long as that works you can still use native Linux mail apps. But there’s rumors that they might go away.
In that case you still have the third party bridge https://github.com/emersion/hydroxide
I made sure to tell them to invest more in Linux when they sent their recent survey my way.
I think their main goal is to reduce their platform support rather than diversify it. Using a single desktop app that’s basically webmail inside a wrapper allows them to support basically any OS with a single app.
The downside for users is that reducing support for IMAP risks of causing lock-in. For better or worse IMAP is the standard way of accessing your messages for backup or to migrate to another provider and discontinuing it would be a very bad move.
…That doesn’t mean they won’t do it though. For example they have an export feature buried somewhere on their website. They could decide to kill the bridge & IMAP and only offer the export as the sole means of egress. In theory you would not be locked in, in practice who knows what the limitations might be. From a technical point of view, accessing your messages “live” through an IMAP bridge is a lot more secure than requesting a zip of all your messages (which needs to be stored temporarily who knows where).
How well does the current linux app for Proton VPN work on mobile?
It might also be easier to get an ARM64 version than a completely separate app.Maybe package that for Ubuntu Touch, however their packaging works.
It works ok on android. On linux desktop, proton vpn app is one of the things keeping me from recommending proton vpn.
