thankfully the vibes are good, and i’m a sucker for seeing a thriller where the cops are arguing with the suits and have to go on a boat ride in the fog, because in the monologue-y bits i just kept going “uhuh, yep. that’s true. yep, that’s true. peace in the imperial core IS propped up by violence elsewhere that will inevitably blow back on the core somehow. the fall of the soviet union DID leave the imperial core thinking it was the end of history when that was obviously bullshit. i KNOW japan is a client state of america and i have a good idea of the jsdf’s complex role there where it’s a “self defense force” but is still effectively a major military and contributes to global hegemony. yep. uhuh. going to say anything new to me before before we get back to the plot? are you going to do anything involving the characters or themes or tone of the show/movie patlabor? no?”
still good, though the first one was way better. imagine if a patlabor movie that included noa izumi, main character of patlabor, as a character! that’d be so crazy
Anytime someone tells me that my Windows update won’t cause problems, I remind them of Patlabor.
noa izumi, main character of patlabor
Actually, Alphonse is the main character of Patlabor.
I totally agree about the first movie being better. Patlabor 2 is much more an Oshii movie than a Patlabor movie. Both are gorgeous movies to look at, though.
Goto is one of my favorite characters in the main cast (he just like me frfr), but I don’t think I needed him being the lead for a 2 hour Metal Gear Solid cutscene.
You’re working through GGP’s G Gundam episodes, so you’ll probably be watching Stand Alone Complex soonish, which is a good time to recommend the podcast Ghost Divers (unless you already listen to them - Niamh does a lit podcast with Em and GD has an Utena season so it’s entirely possible lol)
Actually, Alphonse is the main character of Patlabor.
well alphonse didn’t appear either
i still liked it, gotoh is good even if i wish he hot more to actually do and it’s a really pretty movie, but like. the first one managed to do the mamoru oshii thing AND be a patlabor movie! this one should have just been an original setting tbh, doesn’t engage with any prior stuff at all
i do listen to ghost divers but perhaps surprisingly i have NOT listened to the utena season. i have it all downloaded, i just need to be in a very specific mood to hear a 3 hour discussion of utena, much less 6 of them. i listen to atlf some and got into ghost divers when they got plugged during their ibo season
this one should have just been an original setting tbh, doesn’t engage with any prior stuff at all
WXIII is somehow even less of a Patlabor movie. It’s not bad, but it’s bizarre lol.
I need to get back into AtLF - they’ve got some basic b stuff like Beowulf and Le Morte D’Arthur that I’m more familiar with lol.
Lol, yeah. I’ve watched a couple Patlabor things now. And while I’ve enjoyed them, I kinda expected to be blown away by the way some people have spoken about them.
People who like Oshii-directed stuff tend to really like them GOWATCHDALLOSOKCOOLTHANKS
I already have.
Btw, I finally started watching Space Dandy last night. Waaaaay hornier than I expected it to be.
Are the tunes bops tho
Oh yeah, totally. It’s not at all what I was expecting tho. Kind of all over the place; experimental almost, but very funny at times.
the ova was good! the first movie was great! this was kinda mid tho
Oh yeah they were cool. Think some people just hyped it up too much for me.
that’s totally fair lmao, many such cases
Is patlabor good?
Not like “yeah, it’s cool if you take into account x, y, and z and just focus on…” good
But like, “yeah, it’s a great show, you should check it out” good
Been thinking about it lately
patlabor the ova is a good show, only 7 episodes and all range between good and great. and watching the ova means you get to watch the movie which is great
haven’t seen the tv show but i hear it’s also pretty good
Ooh, 7 episodes. I can sign up for that
to give you an idea of what to expect, the show and the first movie are both kind of comedies. mamoru oshii got his start doing urusei yatsura and it shows in patlabor. they’re GOOD comedies, and they still have action and political themes and stuff, but they’re comedies. i know historically a lot of people have started watching it and bounced off because it isn’t just ghost in the shell, so it’s worth mentioning here
Thanks for immunizing me. I would have totally bounced off it lol
i hope you do still watch it, it’s pretty great. has a few all time episodes, and as mentioned the movie is an incredible thriller more in line with oshii’s more philosophical stuff while still feeling of a piece with the show
I probably will. I really like anime that around or less than 20 episodes.
7 I hardly an investment. And, as you know, I enjoy the mechs
the ingram is a really good mech, and patlabor has a lot of good crunchy mech animation
I can vouch for the TV show (and OVA continuation “The New Files”). Out of around 60 episodes, maybe two are duds.
Great soundtrack too.
I loved it. Big fan of the Wyvern intercept scene.
when things are happening it’s pretty good!
