Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So, how’s it going?
Anyone have a suggestion on where to get nice, strong fridge magnets (for hanging up kids’ art and that sort of thing)?
Go to Pick a Part and get yourself some speaker magnets. They’ll hold good.
Take apart some old hard drives? Or just buy some of those cheap strong magnet sets from Ali/Temu etc. (no idea if they’re any good)
Edit: Just googling there seems to be a shop in Auckland that specialises in magnets: www.magnets.co.nz
Seems like they have a variety of types
Oh nice! I think this is the kind of thing I want: https://www.magnets.co.nz/shop/ceramic-ferrite/pot-and-holding-magnets-ferrite-magnets/plastic-encased-ceramics/large-blue-magnetic-buttons-sold-in-cards-of-5/
Interesting it’s sold under whiteboard accessories, I’ve been searching for the wrong thing this whole time! Thanks 🙂
Where do you live? Presumably any local gift shop will be selling magnets showing off the local attractions.
I’d rather plain. I find it a bit weird to have a fridge full of local trinkets. Well, not really a souvenir trinket fan at all.
That’s a good point. I have a set of random smiley-faced magnets that came from somewhere like Para Rubber or an Asian import shop. The only problem with those is they’re usually packaged so you can’t test them on the shelving to see how strong they are.
You could always buy the touristy ones and get the kidlets to paint over them 😉
Haha yeah, that’s a point, turn them into an art project! Nice idea!
What you want are neodymium magnets - even a tiny button sized one would be a lot more powerful than your average fridge magnet. I ordered mine from https://dangerousmagnets.co.nz/
So, one thing I want is a magnet strong enough to hold up art. But the other thing I want is to not have a kid having their intestines ripped apart (nothing gruesome in that link) if they swallow them. So I’ve specifically tried to avoid the rare-earth magnets, and instead want a magnet that is strong because it is big and unswallowable. Or at the very least, well attached to some larger structure.
Jaycar always used to be good for magnets.
Hmm, a quick browse of their site shows they do have magnets, but I was thinking platic things with a magnet on thback rather than just the magnet. In particular, something big enough to not be swallowed would be good.
I used to like making fridge magnets out of magnet + something else (plastic toy, laminated picture etc). Would hot glue be strong enough to keep your kids from swallowing it?
Yeah hot glue should be fine. That could be a neat project with the (older) kids!
