Chess gets pretty boring because it’s one of those games that can be solved. It’s at its most fun when you have two players of relatively low and equal skill. After that every game kind of boils down to doing the same thing over and over again and you gotta start doing chess variants.
I mean, maybe the super GMs like Magnus can complain about memorizing certain opening lines to some outrageous degree, but even they still have competitive games. For the remaining 99.99999% of players like us, it’s not even close enough to solved to be an issue, imo.

That’s why I play 5D chess with multiverse time travel. No chance of gaining any significant skill there
That game made me feel like a kid again, in the fact that I was wailing at just how much better my opponent was than me.
And then you accidentally inflict checkmate 30 turns ago two timelines over and have no idea how the fuck you did it
