Dude. I just got a 200 dollar ticket for running a red light that was turning yellow to red. Like it was red as the back half of my car passed under the far light, it was close but I was in a hurry with my girlfriend and this fucking pig whips out of his speed trap and says he “has to” give me a ticket for that.

Like, okay, even if I BLATANTLY ran it I can’t even justify 200 fucking dollars for it. The asshole must have needed to fill a quota or something because oh my god.

So anyways, I can’t afford this right now. What are the chances I get in deeper trouble if I “forget” about it and never pay or pay late?

There probably will be a time in the future where I can afford it and then I’ll pay but if not like what am I supposed to do lol? Can you imagine someone in a worse position than me getting that shit? Anyways fuck these assholes any normal person would’ve just let me off with a verbal warning but no USian fucking pigs have to funnel their money up

Ignoring it will always make the problem worse and more expensive. Unless you’re going to be a complete putz in court, the worst possible outcome is that you wasted perhaps an hour of your time and still have to pay the ticket that you already had to pay anyway. This is the only way to get out of a ticket or reduce the cost.

There are no court costs. Points are set by statute, a judge cannot give you points off your license because they’re having a bad day. You may wish to pursue free legal assistance to clarify the laws in your area before disputing the ticket.

Just don’t try violence or threaten or curse at the judge or the pig and the worst that will happen is that you don’t get the ticket reduced or dismissed. There is no consequence for disputing the ticket.

If you cannot afford to pay the ticket by the deadline, you must show up in court to dispute it.

If the cop shows up beforehand, they may try to talk to you and try to screw you into admitting guilt. DO NOT TALK TO THE COP!!!

This. Only way out of it is to go to the court date. Most of the time cops don’t even show up for those and as long as you show you can get out of the ticket just for them being absent. Other times the cops just want OT and show up and usually don’t give a fuck about the ruling because they get paid OT regardless. Cops be getting easy six figures doing this in my area.

To add on to what the other person said. If you show up in court for it to contest it the cop themselves needs to show up as well AFAIK. A decent amount of the time they don’t bother to show up so the ticket ends up getting dismissed. However sometimes they do show up in which case I’m not certain if disputing it puts you in a worse spot than not like points on your driver’s license if as mentioned the judge is spiteful that day. If the cop made their quota and then some chances are greater that they probably won’t bother to show whereas if they didn’t there might be some pressure to make sure they get close by closing your ticket out with a win but it’s all up in the air.

They won’t accept inability to pay as an excuse or go easy on you over it, at most you can get a payment plan so I guess try for that.

Oh no comrade I appreciate that very much but you need it ❤️ I still shouldn’t have gone knowing there’s pigs around me, I’ve got to deal with it now. Should be able to put it off for a month or two

Ignoring it will make it more expensive or worse.

Contesting it gives you a small chance of getting out of it, though. The cop might not show up and if they don’t then you’ve got a very good chance with making your case of, “no I didn’t run that light”.

However, if you have to take a day off work or drive a long ways, you’re still losing that cost, so factor that into your decision.

    end of the month

cops ticketing you for absolute bullshit

Oh yeah, it’s filling a quota time. Do the risky shit the first 3 weeks or so but never on the last few days. Ironically, stopping at that same light would probably have been more risky as you’d have to slam on the brakes.

Like, okay, even if I BLATANTLY ran it I can’t even justify 200 fucking dollars for it.

In my third world country that would cost you at least twice as much, and you’d also lose your licence for at least 3 months.

But on the other hand the traffic cams won’t record you unless all 4 of your wheels were in front of the traffic lights when they turned red.

I have never gotten a ticket for running a red light. I may have done so once or twice but I guess I was just lucky no one was around to see it. But I have gotten my share of speeding tickets and especially parking tickets and I definitely get the impression they are always looking for the slightest excuse to milk money out of you. It’s all the more frustrating when you know that you are actually a pretty safe driver and they get you on the tiniest step over the line while you see others who are behaving really recklessly and nobody seems to care.

I really thought as long as you were fully in the intersection during the yellow, then you’d be good. I see people run worse than that all the time.

Real talk, I know it’s unfair and stupid, but it def won’t go away if you ignore it. If you straight up don’t do anything, it’ll probably end up as a minor warrant*. They won’t kick down your door to find you, but they could haul you into jail for a bit if you get pulled over sometime in the future. It just gets more expensive with fees and hassle if you let it sit.

I’ve paid similar tickets in installments before, but that was a long time ago. It can’t hurt to drop by the spot where people pay the tickets just to see if the folks at the counter can get you a payment plan or something like that. Just keep in mind that they’ll probably be meaner than the DMV and try to keep your cool.

You might be able to dispute it in court, but that has the potential of getting a judge on a bad day and making things a lot messier.

I’m sorry you have to deal with this. This shit is absolutely the worst.

The phrasing is usually “Unless emergency braking is required”, which is what you descirbed. Running a yellow light when you can reasonably slow down beforehand and stop is forbidden for everyone’s safety.

It’s really damn confusing tbh. Like sometimes you have to accelerate to clear the intersection before it turns red bc you are going too fast to stop but will still miss the light. I always thought if you were in the intersection on yellow you were good. Anything else feels too subjective.

Anyway it’s stuff like this why I got a cheap dash cam, at least then you’re not open to some pig’s interpretation
