1- Is it possible to search communities?
I mean as in typing the communities’ names or the topic they’re based around in a search bar. I don’t seem to find it.
2- IS there a way to add Alt Text to profile pictures/avatars and banners?
- No, but at https://piefed.social/communities it shows every community that PieFed knows about so you can use your browser’s ‘find in page’ function (Ctrl + F, for a lot of people). Or, use the Topic dropdown to filter the list: https://piefed.social/communities?topic_id=11. I’ve tried to populate that list with all the popular communities but if what you’re seeking isn’t there you’ll need to add it by filling in the form at https://piefed.social/community/add_remote.
- Not currently. I’m doing a lot of accessibility work this week, maybe that’ll get done today or this weekend.

I’ve added alt text to image posts, today. However this only works for image posts created and viewed on PieFed - other threadverse software doesn’t do alt text. The utility of doing the same for avatars and banners is less obvious so I’ll leave that for another time.
Pretty soon I’ll be looking at reworking the communities list. It’s becoming unwieldy already and will only get worse as more communities are added.
Other software don’t do alt text in avatar/banner, but what I do is to add them in the text box of the bio as image descriptions (which is actually more accessible than in-image alt text for those of us who have other disabilities that make full-on screen readers inaccessible to us. Specially in software were the alt text is added to the image and can only be seeing on a little font on top of it, instead of one having the opportunity to open the alt text box and read the alternative text in the big font we use to be able to navigate or to pass it through TTS programs that in some cases do not detect alt text in image the way screen readers do)
On the community list thing, I think adding a search bar will be for the best as, even with the possibility to add communities to the list, it would reach a moment when the list is too long that it becomes less accessible and overwhelming, even with the possibility of filter by category.
Yes, good point about the need for a search tool.
There’s been some big changes. https://piefed.social/communities still exists, but is less central than it was and is not a top-level item on the main menu. It no longer appears in any breadcrumbs. It still needs a search tool ;-)
If you look at the breadcrumbs of a random post, say, this one: https://piefed.social/post/20506 you’ll see that ‘Topics’ comes first, which links to https://piefed.social/topics. From there you can see all the posts in a topic (comprised of several communities). In the right hand column is a list of all communities in the topic.
