This gauntlet dagger – sometimes also known as a ‘punching’ dagger – is designed to be worn on the bearer’s arm like a glove during close quarter combat.
So you give up a whole hand for a tiny spike. Seems like a bad trade.
It’s from World War I and meant for trench fighting, so I suppose I could see having your hand armoured as being a very helpful defensive tool when your opponent is also wielding a knife and neither of you are wearing any other armour besides a helmet.
Hence, it was forgotten.
