Meta and Microsoft say they will buy AMD’s new AI chip as an alternative to Nvidia’s::AMD’s newest AI chip, the Instinct MI300X, could give big tech buyers leverage over Nvidia, if it works as advertised and is price-competitive.
Although this is not a ton of competition, some is better than none at all.
This opens the door for more, as well. It means breaking the reliance on CUDA. Meta originally developed PyTorch and it’s still a large contributor. This means more resources will go into open backends instead of CUDA.
