It is going downhill just as fast. Far right parties haven taken over in many countries already. Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium are currently doing border checks despite being in Schengen. In The Netherlands you have impromptu militias doing border checks as well whose chats have been uncovered saying they want to get weapons and hope they find ‘some brown ones’.

I cannot for the life of my find a house in my home country without paying at least 400-500k for a simple terraced house. Factories are actively poisoning the waters where I live and nobody does anything about it. Climate change is becoming noticeable as we are getting drier and hotter summers and warmer winters every year.

We’re about to spend billions we don’t have to fund the American military complex, bringing devestation to the social welfare system we have.

Just to name a few things. If the US goes down, Europe goes down with it if they don’t make a change soon.

If the US goes down, most of the world will probably fall to chaos because of how centered everything is financially around the US. It would be worse than the 1929. The EU has no measures against this

If it makes you feel better, the UK is threatening to come to the defense of the US as a NAFO member if Iran retaliates (and they sure will)

No, that makes me feel worsw tbh. I mean the sole reason Iran is at where it is now is because of MI6 and CIA intevention, and now they want to do it again? How do they expect the Iranian people to like them when all they even did was putting some tyrannical monarch in power and bombing their country?

I think what OP is getting at is that a lot of liberals still have a lot of hope with the EU system, and it’s keeping people from radical politics.

“We need a European style democracy.”

“The example, right? Well-funded institutions dedicated to working class well-being?”

“No, exploiting Africa and sending billions to Ukraine. How else do we get the healthcare budget to cut in the first place?”

I mean, I don’t think there is anyone who posts about their lived experience around here more than @SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml, and quite a lot of it is about what total shit-holes Belgium and The Netherlands are like to live in. Given their posts, I get the impression it’s just as bad, if not worse, than most places in the US.

So idk where you’re getting the impression that the EU is some magic utopia, maybe you’re just lucky enough to live in a more privileged class of your society? I know from personal acquaintances that they often never came into contact with less fortunate people due to how in Europe it’s much more provincial, and not quite as Urban, so you’re not always going to be made to confront the poverty and exploitation as viscerally as in other parts of the world.

I’ve been saying this for a while but Europeans get very defensive when you suggest that they aren’t the paragons of virtue that their mothers told them they are.

Why? What in your genius do you think is the better solution? Continued rampant colonialism? Exploitation of the periphery and third world? Austerity and the elimination of the disabled in countries like England?

Or just the idea of anything that threatens your cozy coding lifestyle makes you squeal at the idea of your treats getting taken away?

Yes, that is explicitly stated that this was not meant as an argument for that sort of mental fallacy

Asking for accelerationism and asking for higher-awareness of material conditions is different. For most treatlerites, the only thing that’s ever going to give them a higher-awareness is the cut-off of third-world exploitation that all their treats come from.

Wanting the end of the exploitation of the periphery doesn’t mean accelerationism.

I’m so surrounded by treatlerites that I’ve come to sound like an accelerationist. They’re all labor aristocrats and petty-bourgeois wannabes, so they’re not representative of the average person, but they’re so full of themselves and callous towards people having it worse than them, either at home or abroad in imperialized countries, that I just can’t fathom any other way for them to open up to left-wing ideas without their imperial treats being cut off first (although I’m sure the vast majority of them will end up going mask-off, as usual, and publicly embracing islamophobic/xenophobic/queerphobic discourse)

Beyond just that, it’s just objectively a good thing exploitation would stop. Saying that “I don’t think third world countries should be strip-mined for resources” doesn’t mean accelerationism, it’s damage control and prevention. Advocating for those things to be dismantled does mean a significant chunk of “treats” getting stripped away, which I’m not gonna complain about for the reasons you mentioned.

              Labor aristocracy is helluva drug.
