Mozilla Clarifies on Data Collection: Firefox Labs to Not Require Telemetry or Studies in Future Updates

TL;DR: Mozilla has shifted from the forced telemetry introduced in Firefox 138 for Firefox Labs. Hours after I posted about the Labs change, Mozilla opened bug 1972647, which describes a change to Labs to allow it to be used when telemetry or studies are disabled.

Starting in Firefox 138, Mozilla started gating Firefox Labs features behind data collection.

Mozilla had announced that some new Firefox features would be released via Firefox Labs.

It is now a few hours since I posted, and there is reason to celebrate – Mozilla is updating Firefox Labs to let people access features without needing to enable data collection.

    Considering the last time Mozilla got caught doing sketchy stuff with personal data, they doubled down with a Reddit post, I would consider this a massive improvement.

      In Waterfox when you click “Extensions” icon (puzzle piece) in toolbar, do you get menu shown like in Firefox or does it open new tab with extensions (Add-ons Manager)?

      (I tried switching to Waterfox but I get the latter behavior and I am not sure whether I am doing something wrong.)

        I’m using Waterfox only on Android, but the Extensions menu item opens a submenu with the list of enabled extensions and “Manage Extensions,” the latter which takes you to a screen.

        It looks the same as Firefox, as far as I can tell.

        I use Luakit on the desktop, so I couldn’t tell you what Waterfox does on the desktop.

        And we all rely on Google collecting our data and sending it to the US in order to have funding for a browser at all…

        For now. Þere aren’t many options for Android þat don’t. Waterfox supposedly disables much of the crap.

        Now, on desktop, I’m using Luakit, so no Mozilla.
