Consistently short sleep duration more likely to precede symptoms than inverse, genetic data reveal
No sh*t sherlock ;D
This was my exact response after reading the headline. And then again when I read the article.
So you’re depressed and can’t sleep, so you sleep less which makes you more depressed, which means you fall asleep late, so you get even less sleep…
“Just snap out of it” - people who have no idea what you’re going through

“Just snap out of it” hits close to home. I didn’t realize a lot about depression and felt like I could just eat right or exercise… The Hilarious World of Depression podcast really helped me figure out we aren’t just a good day away from being fine.
That’s okay, your boss just installed a suicide net outside the building.
It’s 4am and I just woke up because a pack of coyotes were screaming and sounding like the Halloween score.
I get on Lemmy. I read this.
Fuck.
AWOOO NOTHING LEFT TO DO BUT CRANK THAT HOG, BROTHER
Good thing I get 6 a night, only have Depression Lite™
Let’s get back to the office and commute, so we can all be depressed.
For the shareholders!
Less than 7 hours will fuck me up
Yeah, I know
Could somebody get my anxiety on the phone? It’s gonna wanna hear this.
That’s great but then why the fuck can I never fall asleep until unreasonably late
Anxiety. Which is possibly causing the depression.
What if you supplement it with an afternoon nap tho?
Polyphasic sleep! If you do it right you could probably be able to feel fully rested this way while sleeping fewer hours in total than you would in traditional monophasic sleeping.
Do a study and publish!
Polyphasic sleep is sorely understudied, and iirc we barely understand if it’s not harmful.
“We have this chicken or egg scenario between suboptimal sleep duration and depression. They frequently co-occur, but which comes first is largely unresolved. Using genetic susceptibility to disease we determined that sleep likely precedes depressive symptoms, rather than the inverse,”
I don’t agree with this position. They may have proven sleep disregulation can be a prodromal symptom but I highly doubt it’s causitive.

I can fall asleep easily and early, only to be awoken at least once an hour by the baby waking up and crying. That is been going on like that for the last three weeks. Really hoping he will be able to sleep a bit longer soon ^^
Congrats on the baby! The first few months are hard, but it will get much better soon!
Plot twist: it’s the neighbor’s baby in a newly constructed “luxury” apartment complex with paper thin walls. OP is just a really empathetic and patient person, and does not begrudge the neighbor.
It’s already month 7, it was better but got a bit worse now ^^
Are you swaddling the baby? That got ours to sleep through the night. It seems like it would be mean, but they like it.
We did when he was smaller, but now he is over 7 months so I think he needs to be able to move a bit during the night. My guess is that it’s probably the 8-Months sleep regression.
I admit, I can’t remember how long we did it for. I think until she figured out how to get out of it every night, but I don’t know how old she was.
