President Trump said Thursday a shooting at Florida State University that killed two people was “terrible” and a “shame,” but suggested he’s unlikely to back any new gun control measures — saying he’s a “big advocate of the Second Amendment.”
Why am I not surprised?
What gun laws could even stop this? Or like any mass shooting for that matter? Laws aren’t magical binding principles carved into the fabric of reality, they’re fuzzy little guidelines that the system may or may not follow at its whim or the whim of whatever enforcer is closest.
Like mass shooters are almost exclusively middle class white men with reactionary beliefs that cops sympathize with, and exactly the demographic that gun laws never target. And then you’ve got the ones who already can’t legally own firearms or shouldn’t legally own firearms but who get to own them anyways because domestic violence isn’t taken seriously by cops, or because they just steal them from family members.
Here the gun in question was stolen from a family member, who was a cop, and while cops absolutely should be barred from owning or carrying firearms they’re definitely the last group liberals would ever try to disarm.
Most terrorist attacks. And the ones that aren’t done by white men are done by other homophobic, sexist, racist reactionaries. The number of mass shootings and terrorist attacks where the perpetrator was legitimately mentally ill can be counted on one hand. The number of leftwing terrorist attacks, including ecoterrorism, is non-existent.
You have to go back to the Troubles or the Red Army Faction in order to find innocent people getting killed by leftist terrorism. Otherwise, most leftwing terrorist attacks are done against people who are either themselves armed or part of something heinous. Reactionaries seem to prefer innocent, unarmed people. They even try to kill other reactionaries for not believing in the same antisemitic conspiracy theories, like Trump is a clone and the real Trump is being held hostage at a Pizza Hut in Arkansas.
And like you say, gun laws never do anything to stop these people. They either change methods (such as running people over with cars, bombs, knife attacks, etc.) or they find a way around the law to acquire firearms legally. People are being deported for saying less, killed by police for going to work, and these fuckwads are allowed to plan the next mass killing.
