Unlike the US, which totally doesn’t have an impoverished working class? Both countries have completely povertous working classes.
The US is on the path to be sure but the British are more impoverished. That’s not praise of the US, the British are more progressed.
The US has more extreme poverty but at that point it’s not even useful. It’s hard to put chronically homeless people with an array of health problems acquired from living outside to work in a factory.
The class of people capable of working in factories are more impoverished in the UK though.

There is still mining potential left. And Oil, Ferberite, the rest is mostly sand & gravel. Anglo American extracts potash in Yorkshire, I think. They could always mine coal, but like there are only 200+ coal miners left from the 690.000 in the 60s.
That is why they need an impoverished working class. The children yearn for the factories.

It does feel funny that globalisation was built up by all these massive trade deals that included years of negotiation and was often signed off on by by the countries’ parliaments. And then just one man, Trump, undoes all of it.
Not that I’m taking the side of the neoliberal trade agreements of the past, tho.

The McDonalds thing was never close to true. There had been a number of inter-McDonald country wars before it was claimed in 1999, and many more since then.
They still use the saying but it’s replaced with “democracies” so they can define wars out of existence by declaring one of the countries wasn’t a “democracy”
It wasn’t even true at the time it was said, Guatemala (I think) has been invaded by the US a few years before

Basically, we’ve hit the limits for being able to raise the living conditions for those living in the metropolitan powers of the colonial era, and we can no longer pretend that globalization will allow us to endlessly expand our consumption and raise quality of life with no negative consequences. At least, no negative consequences as long as we collectively ignore the fact that we’ve just outsourced the worst consequences of pursuing these policies to poorer countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. As long as the sweatshops, wars over resources, crushing poverty and widespread suffering due to famine, droughts and war happened elsewhere, to other people that only get a short paragraph about their suffering from the consequences of Western economic policies, rather than having to write the “Oh, it’s so sad how they’re suffering horribly because of what we continue to do,” articles about people living in the UK, rather than in Sudan or something, they could count on a majority of people to bury their heads in the sand and act as though everything was going swimmingly.
Now that we’re hitting the reality of those consequences coming home to impact us first-hand, the jig is up and we have to break out some new type of smoke and mirrors to try and keep the populace from seeing through the lies and realizing the whole system is a worm-eaten husk that needs to be torn down before it comes down on our heads.
But it’s Starmer. He’s a Tory at heart.

Britons have it in their head that “the working class” are your standard reform-voting gammons and they love their bosses more than anything.
Therefore, to appeal to “the working class” they need to be as far-right as possible because only a capitalist swine would go against the majority and openly say something like “it is bad to be racist.”
I feel like globalization has only failed because anti socialist propaganda has been too successful. If imperial core countries would actually work with china instead of constantly trying to act superior, and fearing the red menace. We’d have a shot. But oh well in the next life I guess.
