IIUC,
the US had/has a Communist party, and you could probably sell copies of Pravda;
while the USSR had no liberal party, and it’s doubtful you could have a copy of the NYT.

I don’t think that your right to have a copy of Pravda in the US was illusory.
You can have it, you just can’t have much more. No real change. You can have newspaper. But you can’t change the system
