It’s tied to Instagram, and lots of people exchange instagram as a form of contact (which is weird already), so it’s already got huge potential once people find out about it. It’s very possible it supplants Twitter with how that’s going.

        Yep. If this lets users:

        • use their existing account
        • follow people they already follow
        • do everything Twitter did for free…

This thing is gonna take off.

Meh, for ‘normies’, if you want to put it that way, maybe. But a lot of people that used twitter before used it exactly because it allowed you to use an ‘online only’ persona. A nickname, nothing else.

A lawsuit for what exactly? You can’t sue a company just for making a new product unless they somehow abuse their position to promote their product at the expense of other similar products.

In the privacy section of the App Store it shows Threads basically collecting all data on your phone. So I guess standard Meta practice.

I believe it’s based of activitypub like federated protocol. But doesn’t stop facebook from forking it to a point where its just as good as defederated. As much as i hate facebook; i would like for there being competition for twitter, so monopoly can be challenged!

I could see this actually gaining popularity from their Instagram user base. Twitter doesn’t attract younger people or influencers. It’ll be like discovering Facebook for gen z, where they can also share text posts. Maybe that’ll attract the people who left Twitter for turning alt-right. If it gets big enough, public figures could even leave Twitter. I’d be shocked if that happened, but a gal can hope.

This isn’t something I have any interest and I hate meta as much as anyone else here, but I’m interested in seeing how it will play out. If we can’t escape capitalism, at least we can watch it as a social experiment.

They might become interested once they have a platform that targets them. I know it’s a little different from people who jumped on to MySpace or early Facebook because we started with text posts, not really pictures. It’s still true that younger people love to post their thoughts or opinions thinking that others care as much as they do.

It could also be a good tool for “celebrities” to directly interact with their followers. Instagram’s interface isn’t really set up for that.

Unpopular opinion, but I will try it, try to connect it to my fediverse instance then try to promote fediverse and my fediverse account in thread.
