Armor should direct the blade away from your neck at all times
Only if you leave your arms down, if you raise them it would keep your neck protected.
So after you did a swing, or if you are just holding a shield in front of you, they leave a giant gap for the sword.

Yeah, they both stand out, which stops the sword from sliding off, and they are even arched, which can lead the sword closer to the neck.
