I do enjoy an oat milk latte. It alters the coffee flavour less than any other milk I’ve tried.
Really? I’ve experienced the exact opposite. Oat milk in coffee tastes like oatmeal coffee to me. Which isn’t a bad thing but certainly isn’t altering the flavor less 😆
I put oatmilk in my oatmeal and got exactly what I should have expected to get 😐
I had the same experience with the first few oat milks I tried, but after trying a few more, I found a couple I really like that come the closest to mimicking half & half of any non-dairy creamer I’ve tried. I quite like the Chobani Extra Creamy and recently tried the Planet Oat Barista (when I couldn’t find the Chobani) and really enjoyed it. They’re both full-bodied and have a good mouthfeel. You’ll still get that slight hit of oats, but I find it isn’t as distracting when the creaminess is correct. Most non-dairy milk alternatives are just too watery to be enjoyed in coffee.
The issue is exactly like piracy. Offer a better service! The plant milks are pretty ok.
I mean, it’s cool and all, but most people see it as “non-dairy” rather than “vegan”. The word has too many negative connotations nowadays.
I honestly discovered oat milk because it’s what’s best in overnight oats, and that’s my wife’s newest fascination. I like it a bit more than almond and soy, too.
Isn’t oat milk mostly vegetable fat? It’s really not very good for you at all, if I remember correctly
Edit: This is the thing I read
I’m not too sure about that link. At points he’s arguing that it’s got the glucose equivalent of a can of coke and the oil of french fries. Might be a fine print technicality or something, but at best that’s misleading.
Granted, I don’t drink it for health reasons anyway. But, the nutritional information puts most of its fat contents in the healthy unsaturated category. The added sugars are perhaps a bigger concern, but everything in moderation. It’s not something I’m guzzling by the gallon.
I’m kind of annoyed that the zeitgeist hasn’t gotten into horchata, why no love for rice milk. Almond milk is wonderful too but so bad for the enviroment, but I love the weird film on my tongue I get from my oatmeal.
Oat and soy milk ftw.
Have you tried chufa horchata?
Wheat based milk lasts longer I’ve found, and I don’t drink enough milk so a normal carton always ends up going bad with up to half of it still left. Worth it for me, even though it’s more expensive! Not supporting diary is just a bonus.
We used to always end up with expired milk because we don’t drink it straight, only use it to cook and with certain foods.
We switched to lactose free because, like many people, lactose doesn’t agree with me. The lactose free stuff we get keeps significantly longer and we almost never have to dump expired anymore.
Depending on where you live. Over here the prices of plant based milks retained their prices for the most part while dairy surged. On top, big retailers (Kaufland, Lidl) released their own plant milks that go for as low as 1.20€ per carton. Pretty good stuff too!
Oh yeah, diary milk is surging in price here, too. Wheat based has stayed the same ever since I discovered it a year ago.
By the way, you’re spelling dairy the wrong way around. So, “dairy” is correct. And “diary” is the journal that some people write in daily…
I think the vegan meat game was doomed from the start. Most vegans have already worked the meat out of their diets so needing a replacement isn’t really there for most of them. But it is good when you just want to eat a burger or have some meatballs in your spaghetti.
I’m not vegetarian, but I’ve made strides to eat less meat. Being able to order an impossible burger in tons of restaurants has been great
It’s also a very artificial category, as they only count the new explicitly branded fake burgers etc, while mock duck has been around for literal centuries and isn’t going anywhere.
Seriously. I love black-bean patties, for example. Who needs that shit to actually taste like meat?
I can buy these dried soy shreds here, which make for very good meatball replacements. 🙃
I just got some of these shreds to try, I have high hopes then! Is there a recipe online that you’ve tried and could recommend?
I’ve switched to making my own. The nice blender costs about 25 liters of average Alpro milk cartons (which isn’t even the most expensive).
Good recipe(s)?
I just soak them well before. Not to link to the dark place, but here’s a nice recipe for oat milk: https://www.reddit.com/r/veganrecipes/comments/tylm6x/homemade_oat_milk_recipe_how_to_make_oat_milk/
Thanks!
I was surprised that I liked soy milk. I figured it would suck when I first tried some, but it is really good. I still don’t really like it for cooking or on my cereal; but as a drink? So, so good. Someone suggested oat milk, as I haven’t tried that yet and I’m thinking it might be good in cereal since it probably kinda tastes like oatmeal.
Oak milk is pretty thick, almost like half and half. I’ve been using almond milk for my cereal, and I’ve liked it
for me oatmilk is way ahead of dairy milk for cereal. but i also just prefer oatmilk to all other milks generally. its really nice!
Oat milk I think has the closest viscosity to dairy milk. I use it in tea and on cereal a lot. I think the only area it struggles is with baking, I’m guessing it’s the fats (or lack of)
I’ve tried oat milk a few times last year. Never quite got used to the taste. The stuff I tried all tasted quite sweet and a bit like coffee creamer. I certainly wouldn’t use it as a 1:1 replacement for milk, but I guess people generally like it.
Between my milk and cheese habits, I’m definitely glad I’m not vegan :D
The animals aren’t.
Sure, but growing up in the Netherlands, milk and cheese are pretty much part of my religion. I honestly couldn’t imagine life without them.
I’ve tried a bunch of milk replacements, vegan cheeses, etc. Because I DO prefer something more ethical. But especially for cheese, there’s really no replacement that tastes just like the real thing.
Precision fermentation is supposed to make consumer cheeses this year
Hope so! Would be great to have some good vegan cheese.
I keep emailing companies hoping they’ll give some updates but I get nothing:( I can’t wait it’s the only animal product I actually miss
We really like oat milk. there’s different types that have different tastes and textures. Maybe try another brand.
I did try several brands, but all of them were definitely sweeter than what I’m used to in regular milk. Any particular brand you’d recommend?
Are you in the US? If so Trader Joe’s has two types- one they refrigerate with the milk, and another that is kept with the almond milk at room temperature- that one is a smaller box and has a good texture that I like. You could try both though.
Gotta get the “extra creamy” oat milk.
Personally, I mostly use oat milk in my morning cereal, which generally has oatmeal in it, so it fits in quite naturally…
Yeah, for stuff like that I imagine it doesn’t make much of a difference. Would probably work great with things like chocolate cereals as well which are sweet anyway.
You might like almond or cashew milk. They (ironically) have less of the nutty aftertaste. And IMO just always stick to unsweetened (or minimally sweetened) choices of all of them.
I don’t think I’ve ever tried cashew milk before… will give that a try for sure. I love cashews anyway, so might as well.
It’s worth trying a few brands. We get ours delivered, and if we ever have to get an extra carton from the shop it’s way worse than the usual sort. What we get mostly is amazing tho, can’t get enough.
