The climate problem caused by relentless pursuit of quarterly profit is starting to affect our quarterly profits!!! When it was just the majority of the human species at stake it was just fun and games, but now it’s starting to disrupt %1er pocketbooks in no meaningful way so now I care.

HuR dUr DeRp you’re the global 1%!

Just needed to pointlessly point that out when people mention the problems in our society!

It doesn’t serve any purpose other than deflecting, but HuR dUr DeRp it’s a point I can make to look smart!

This response is really interesting to me. Can you really see no other thing that could have motivated my comment than to anonymously look smart? Do you really believe that assigning blame to those most responsible for causing the problem is a deflection? Who am I protecting by “scapegoating” the relentless pursuit of short term profits by investors for driving the climate crisis as well as driving the main opposition to policy which may allow us to avoid the mass death and suffering that industry is leading us toward?

No, sorry! That’s not at all what I intended. It was to cut off the jerks that love to make that comment when they see people refer to the 1%. It’s always “yeah buddy you’re the global 1% too so…”

Sorry if it seemed like it was directed at you specifically!

Bad reddit habit. I would leave comments that reference what I’m replying to, but really meant for those that come read the thread after.

What ? Climate change is impacting negatively the economy ?

No it’s not possible. Remember, 3°C of warming would only reduce the global GDP by 2.1%. (According to Nobel prize winner William Nordhaus)

So please stop complaining, put a hat, pull your bootstrap and go back to the construction site. And try not to fall in the ground because you might get a third degree burn on the asphalt and we can’t afford a replacement since nobody want to work anymore.

The Nordhaus estimates were always known for having limited utility for large changes in temperatures.

They assumed that damage to a sector wouldn’t matter much if it was currently a small part of the economy. For example, if agriculture was 2% of the US economy, and agricultural output went to zero, the result would be 2% damage to GDP. The real world doesn’t work that way though: people who are starving to death don’t work, so GDP would go to zero in that case.

I really hope this triggers the ruling class to care but I get the feeling it’ll be thrown on the pile of other “investments that make money” along with healthcare, working public transit, proper electrical grid, and free college. 🙃

Either that, or the deaths and heat-related disinterest (read: giving up their skill or never getting into it in the first place) that causes the worker pools to dwindle. Cooled suits won’t totally fix that issue, because it will be another hurdle that people will need to get past. Which is already a huge thing with many skills that people probably never have a chance to try due to cost or setup requirements.

I sense a certain billionaire is going to propose construction workers should only work night shifts and that’s why his silly ten sign is glowing like Ashalim Power Station
