Although I’ve always believed that Google collects more, it seems that Meta gets maligned more frequently than Google in the eyes of the general public. Since then I’ve been growing curious on the matter. Should Meta deserve less respect on this subject than Google?

    It’s not so much that data is collected as it is how that data is used. Meta has a long, long history of doing extremly creepy shit with collected data — even from users who don’t have an account.

    Google doesn’t do that, so people are a bit more forgiving of them. I personally dislike both equally, though.

      This is it. Both businesses make money selling targeted ads, so both want to know everything about you. Though Google seems content just serving ads, and they appear forthright about what they do. Facebook seems creepier, like they want to covertly steer our behavior to maximize ad revenue.
